American Studies Seminar 2008

“Understanding the 2008 Presidential Election in a historical context” was the theme of the American Studies Seminar from March 26-29 at the Journalists’ Union of Thessaloniki, organized by the U.S. Consulate General in Thessaloniki and the University of Macedonia.  Participants attended lectures and panel discussions led by Prof. Goldfield, Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History, University of North Carolina – Charlotte and G. Calvin Mackenzie, Colby College, The Goldfarb Family Distinguished Professor of American Government among other university professors and lecturers.  U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas Countryman spoke on “U.S. Foreign Policy: Continuity and Evolution” and responded to student questions about the U.S. role in world affairs and foreign policy changes.  The seminar ended with a written examination, administered by the University of Macedonia academic coordinator of the seminar Dr. Theodosis Karvounarakis.  Consul General Yee attended the graduation ceremony and awarded seminar certificates to the students.    

The American Studies Seminar is an interdisciplinary seminar dealing with history, political science, social sciences and economics issues of interest to university students from a variety of academic fields. 

In May, the U.S. Consulate General will organize a two-day seminar on modern security challenges in cooperation with the University of Macedonia and the American College of Thessaloniki.  More details will follow soon.
