Celebrating African American Culture

The American Consulate General and the Hellenic Association for American Studies, in cooperation with the American Literature and Culture Section of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki organized a one-day seminar on the occasion of the celebration of Black History Month, which is the month of February.  World famous musician Chico Freeman spoke on the History of Black Music in America and its socio-economic and political context, sharing his own experiences as a jazz musician, as well as his family’s memories of Louis Armstrong and other famous jazz players.

Dr. Zoe Detsi spoke about the prejudices and hostility black playwrights had to overcome in order for the black American theater to become widely accepted.  Dr. Tatiani Rapatzikou spoke about the efforts of African-American poets to establish themselves in the face of racial discrimination and other social and economic problems.  Dr. Pastourmatzi focused her discussion on African Americans and the post civil rights era.  View the seminar schedule below.
