Noted American bio-ethicist Dr. Ruth Faden, Director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, began the "Great Ideas" series with a lecture in Thessaloniki on December 17, 2007.  The U.S. Embassy in Athens and U.S. Consulate in Thessaloniki organized the lecture on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Fulbright Foundation in Greece

The goal of the “Great Ideas” series, which is generously funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, is to support a strong and positive cultural relationship between Greece and the U.S.  Dr. Faden traveled to Greece for public presentations, discussions with students and representational events hosted by Ambassador Speckhard and Consul General Yee over four days in Thessaloniki and Athens.  Dr. Faden interacted with university students from Greece’s top universities, as well as with the general public during her speeches on "The Moral Challenges Posed by Pandemics" and "Better, Healthier, More Beautiful:  The Ethics of Biomedical Human Enhancement"
