U.S. Embassy Appreciated Cooperation With Greek Authorities

Athens (February 9, 2007) -- Recent press reports that the Ambassador or any U.S. Embassy official has criticized the Minister of Public Order or the Ministry of Public Order are untrue. The U.S. Embassy again expresses its satisfaction with the professional response of Greek law enforcement agencies to the January 12 rocket-propelled grenade attack against the U.S. Embassy. Cooperation between the Hellenic Police Counter-Τerrorism Division and U.S. law enforcement agencies in this Greek-led investigation has been excellent. As Ambassador Ries said to ET-3 earlier this week, "Minister Polydoras has our full confidence. He and Chief Dimoschakis and General Syros and the people in the counter-terrorism service and all the other services are working very hard and following all leads. We are not displeased in any way."

The Embassy appreciates the many messages of sympathy that it has received from Greeks and others in the aftermath of the attack, as well as the continued support of the Government of Greece and the main political parties. Ambassador Ries reiterates that he is "confident that any effort to damage the strong relations between the United States and Greece and the strong working relationship it has with the Ministry of Public Order will not succeed."
