Contesting “We the People”: Inclusion, Exclusion, and the Structure of Identity Politics in the United States” was the theme of Yale American Studies and History professor Matthew Jacobson during an international graduate student conference that was organized in Thessaloniki by the Hellenic Association of American Studies (HELAAS http://www.enl.auth.gr/helaas/ )
Jacobson (http://www.yale.edu/history/faculty/jacobson.html) spoke on race, politics, and culture in regards to the United States Constitution and their evolution throughout the years. He followed a timeline of the inclusion and exclusion of certain groups as they gradually gained recognition in the U.S. system. The conference was a success, featuring several prestigious speakers and numerous art performances.
