U.S. Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Returns to Greece
June 25, 2008
U.S. Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Ambassador J. Christian Kennedy will arrive in Greece today for a series of meetings with Greek government officials and Jewish community leaders in Athens and Thessaloniki. Ambassador Kennedy will be discussing issues regarding the Jewish cemetery in Thessaloniki and restitution for property lost by the Jewish community as a result of the Nazi occupation during WWII. Ambassador Kennedy's visit is taking place in the framework of regular consultations with European officials on Holocaust remembrance, compensation and restitution.
Ambassador Kennedy returns to Greece after his October 2007 visit, when the Greek Parliament unanimously ratified amendments to the International Tracing Service Commission founding agreements, allowing a wider population access to Holocaust-era archives.
