Athens (December 4, 2008) -- The U.S. Embassy in Athens and U.S. Consulate General in Thessaloniki are pleased to announce that filmmaker Sandra Schulberg, Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, will present "A Modern Look at the Films of the Marshall Plan" to Greek audiences on December 15-16. Focused on the lessons these films about reconstruction after World War II can teach us about today's post-conflict situations, Schulberg's visit is part of a regional tour to Poland, Switzerland, Turkey, Greece, and Belgium funded under the U.S. Department of State's Strategic Speakers Initiative.
On December 15 in Athens, Schulberg will speak at the Hellenic American Union auditorium at 19:00. This lecture and film screening is open to the public, and admission is free. Earlier that day, at 11:00, the Greek Union of Press Attaches will host Schulberg at an event at the General Secretariat for Information- General Secretariat for Communication also open to the public. In Thessaloniki on December 16, the U.S. Consulate General will introduce Schulberg and show the films in its Tiano Room, to invited guests.
Schulberg heads the Selling Democracy Project, presenting 300 rare Marshall Plan films which showcase the European recovery plan instigated by U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall after World War II. Postwar conflict resolution, rehabilitation of civil society, infrastructure creation, and the search for diplomatic rather than military solutions are issues reflected in these films. Schulberg, founder of the Independent Feature Project, is a distinguished film producer whose credits include the Oscar-nominated Quills, Undisputed, Shadow Magic and many other works.
