ATHENS (August 17, 2006)  The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has announced that Leonard Slatkin will replace Sir Andrew Davis on its upcoming European tour.  The renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will give a concert under the direction of Leonard Slatkin in Patras, on August 25, 2006, at 9:30 p.m.  The concert is taking place within the context of the “European Capital of Culture, Patras 2006,” and is under the auspices of the U.S. Embassy in Athens.  The Orchestra is on a European tour and commences its European performances in Greece.

With its noble history of the finest conductors and musicians and its strong commitment to artistic quality and excellence, audiences around the world have claimed the Pittsburgh Symphony as their orchestra of choice.  Founded in the early 20th century, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra offers exceptional performances, with Sir Andrew Davis as Artistic Consultant and Yan Pascal Tortelier and Marek Janowski as Guest Directors.

The Pittsburgh Symphony is not only recognized as one of the best orchestras globally thanks to its exceptional live performances, but also thanks to its unique recordings and live radio broadcasts.  Since 1941, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has made hundreds of critically acclaimed recordings, which are available on the EMI, Angel, CBS, Philips, MCA, New World, Nonesuch, Sony Classical and Telarc labels.

Today, the Pittsburgh Symphony draws upon musicians from all five continents and music schools throughout the world.  Leonard Slatkin is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading conductors and is in his tenth season as Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra.  In 2005 he began his tenure in the new post of Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and was recently named Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.  Mr. Slatkin is also conductor laureate of the Saint Louis Symphony, following his 17-year music directorship.  He last conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra earlier this year.
