Consulate General Commemorates Former Colleague David Tiano, [19__ to 1942]
On February 6, the American Consulate General in Thessaloniki hosted the Second Annual David Tiano Lecture, delivered by Dr. Paul Hagouel on “The Holocaust of Thessaloniki Jews”. Dr. Hagouel spoke about the history of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, and presented archival material that he has collected regarding the registration of Thessaloniki’s Jewish population during the Nazi occupation that led to the deportation and death of 96% of the city’s Jews in Nazi concentration camps. The Consulate established the annual lecture in commemoration of David Tiano, a Jewish Greek employee of the Consulate during WWII who was arrested and executed by the Nazis on February 7, 1942. The lecture is held in the Consulate’s Tiano Room, a multi-purpose room named in his honor.
