U.S. Experts in Greece to Review Visa Waiver Program Candidacy

November 27, 2007

The next step in Greece's candidacy for the Visa Waiver Program, a formal technical review led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will move forward this week when a committee of experts arrives in Athens.

The members of the U.S. technical committee are specialists in consular and immigration matters. They will meet with their Greek counterparts in the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Justice, and will visit selected Greek airports as well as border crossing points.

At the conclusion of their visit to Greece, the experts will return to Washington to share their assessment with senior U.S. officials.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice formally nominated Greece to the modernized Visa Waiver Program in an August 31 letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Greece is the only country to have received such a nomination since the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007 became U.S. law on August 3.
