More U.S. Aid to Help Greece With Wildfires
Athens (August 31, 2007) -- On Thursday, August 30, the U.S. government provided another $1.2 million to the Greek government to help combat wildfires. This is the next step beyond the $100,000 donated on Monday, August 27, to the Hellenic Red Cross for immediate needs. The total U.S. government assistance to Greek following the declaration of a state of national emergency due to the wildfires now totals $1.3 million.
This latest contribution will go toward the purchase of firefighting equipment and to fund a technical assistance team from the U.S. Forest Service and USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance. The team will arrive in Athens this Sunday, September 2. The experts will work with officials in Greece to address fire management, emergency management systems, fire investigation, burned area emergency rehabilitation, and ecosystem and watershed restoration.
